Volm Companies, in Collaboration with Matrix, Introduces a High-Speed Produce Packaging SolutionOct 04, 2012
ANTIGO, Wis. — Volm Companies, Inc., introduced an innovative produce packaging solution that combines the Volmpack® Ultrek 320 vertical form-fill-seal packaging machine with Volm’s Ultratech® mesh, the company’s proprietary polyethylene mesh. Volm Companies collaborated with Matrix Packaging Machinery to develop the Ultrek 320 and it is based on Matrix machines that are currently on the market. Volmpack Ultrek 320 eliminates former labor-intensive mesh packaging methods and improves packaging speeds. Volm’s Ultratech mesh’s high strength-to-weight ratio results in stronger, more stable, sustainable, lighter weight packaging, and provides breathability to maintain produce integrity and freshness.
“The Volmpack Ultrek 320 enables produce to be packaged at a rate of 42 to 45 bags per minute for a 24 ounce package,” said Scott Erickson, Vice President, Volm Companies. “This increase in production is money in our customers’ pockets. The vertical form-fill-seal machine’s Ultratech mesh is 30 percent lighter as well as thinner and flatter than traditional mesh. That makes a significant impact on sustainability since the mesh’s production uses fewer natural resources.”
“Volm came to us with the vision of a machine that would improve both productivity and sustainability for its customers in the produce industry,” said Marc Willden, vice president and general manager Matrix, a ProMach business. “During the entire development process, we could not have asked for a better partner or more worthy design goals.”
Other benefits of the Ultrek 320
The Ultrek 320, available only from Volm Companies, gives packagers the flexibility of rolls of pre-labeled Ultratech mesh or they can select the mix and match mesh/label feature. The Ultrek 320 has a custom back stand that allows packagers to choose from different colors, labels, and weight of meshes to produce efficiently and meet their customers’ needs. This flexibility enables companies to choose the desired bag/label combinations as needed rather than buying and storing a wide variety of pre-labeled bags. Bags can also be customized to strengthen brand recognition and enhance merchandizing opportunities.
“Volm Companies has a long history of developing packaging solutions to improve the profitability and productivity of its customers,” said Erickson. “We recognized that engineering a lighter weight mesh with less mass and working closely with an industry leader like Matrix is a winning partnership. The development of the Volmpack Ultrek 320 vertical form-fill-seal machine running the Ultratech mesh enables us to help customers improve packaging speed, while at the same time reducing their carbon footprint.”
