Coffee Support and Matrix Packaging - Working Together to Package What the Customer Needs

While performance is an important factor to consider when selecting a new bagging machine, you also need to review the brand, as well as its level of customer service. It was these factors and more that led Coffee Support to choose two Mercury vertical form fill seal machines from Matrix to fill its pillow packs for customers. With the combination of the two powerful machines, they were able to construct the exact coffee bagging solution for their output needs. Founded in 2021, Phoenix AZ based Coffee Support helps coffee shops of all sizes develop and package their own custom craft brands.

While performance is an important factor to consider when selecting a new bagging machine, you also need to review the brand as well as its level of customer service. It was these factors and more that led Coffee Support to choose two Mercury vertical form-fill seal machines from Matrix to fill its pillow packs for customers.

Founded in 2021, Phoenix, Arizona-based Coffee Support helps coffee shops of all sizes develop and package their own custom craft brands.

"Coffee Support is a one-stop shop for all the elements of producing coffee. Whether you're looking for sourcing, grain, roasting, or cold brew, we can offer a la carte services along that line of production. A lot of companies either don't have the time or capital to spend on a facility. We are presented as an extension of your business without complicating the branding of your business."

Coffee Support discovered Matrix while attending Pack Expo in Las Vegas. The company had purchased a bagger from a different supplier but was experiencing challenges in customer support. After their meeting with Matrix, Coffee Support was confident they had found their new partner.

"Three things that stand out for me are: Number one, we were not sold anything. We were given an education on products that were relevant to what we were looking for, and we were consulted with quality information on what the machines should be doing and what they shouldn't be doing. We were also greeted by a great staff, which was a key indicator for us that from a service side, we could expect that same flow down from the folks at the show as the sales guys. And the third piece was that the equipment had been around for many years, and it just felt like a really good fit for the way we run our business and the way that Matrix has obviously been running theirs for years."

The Mercury is a high-speed filling machine capable of producing up to 140 bags per minute. The machine comes with a stainless steel frame, a small footprint, and a Nema 4X electrical enclosure. It can produce bag widths from 2 inches to 11 inches and bag lengths from 3 inches to 15 inches on a single pull. Controlling the machine is an Allen-Bradley MicroLogix PLC system with a 7-inch color touchscreen.

"In this particular application, the Matrix Mercury is a great fit because of its low footprint. It's easy to use, intuitive, and easy to change over. For a contract manufacturer like we are today, they can switch from product to product very quickly and get up and running in almost no time at a very high speed."

"The two Mercuries are really easy to get set up for us. Our biggest challenge in coffee is the difference in densities for every roast. When we're working with a packaging piece of equipment, we can't run by volume; we have to run by weight. But the Mercuries, the way they're set up, make it really easy to dial that weight in quickly, and it's really consistent."

The two Mercuries were installed about a month after Pack Expo. One machine operates about nine hours a day, five days a week, producing 2.5 and 3-ounce pillow packs at a rate of about 65 bags per minute. The other machine is set up to run larger 5 or 8-ounce packs when orders dictate.

"So that's another big differentiator for Matrix compared to the competition: We're not just here to sell you a machine and move on to the next one. We're really here to build a long-term partnership with our customer base. It's not about how good the machine is when you first get it; it's when you need help, where's that company to help keep you going. I would say if you're looking for redundancy, quality, time efficiency for your staff, programmability—all the key things that are needed in a manufacturing world—I cannot recommend Matrix highly enough."
